HELLO J2s!

now when most of us who go back for pracs are gone, bet you all will miss our presence soon :D

dont worry you still have the girls, haojie and thomson who havent gone in yet. so feel free to ask them for help if yall need any.

now that cca exhibition is over, you probably have a list of interested juniors who are probably thinking at home whether they should really join mad or not, or even watching videos or going for lessons outside to help secure their entry into hiphop.

and in a few weeks time, even more prospective juniors will be filling up the forms to sign up for auditions. some ppl will be inspired by fac dance to pick up dance and try for hiphop too (hehe dance ics btr do a good job k. esp since almost all the dics are from hh)

take this time to encourage more ppl to try for it because there are some ppl (like me) who didnt have the guts to write my name on the form and in the end smsed huihua on the day before auditions to register for it.

regardless of whether you all have been practising hard or not, this is the time when you really need to aspire to improve even more, because there's 2 really strong reasons to do so:

1) juniors
2) for dancenight

you wont know how much you're bothered by your juniors until the day they come in. i think for our batch it mattered quite a fair bit. like i kind of feared that you all would come in and own us in standards. but luckily yall kena own by matthew's choreo HAHA.
swagg it out~

your basics must be solid. only then will you be able to help your juniors improve too. and that goes a long way to helping them consolidate their foundations and helping you guys to bond with the juniors too.

remember all the key points that anan has always emphasized on. be it from isolations, holding your moves, listening to the beats, there's always minute details to each move, and helping to remind each other, not simply just the juniors, will help to clean up moves and improve a lot.

dancenight is your last performance. it is your last chance to impress everyone on stage, a final chance to perform together as a division and you want to be your best. anyone can recognize that 1 year and 3 months isnt alot of time. coupled with responsibilities of a student, and plenty of other commitments, that hardly amounts to sufficient time to achieve great standards that you may have hoped to reach while watching the videos that first inspired you to dance.

but speaking from experience, we were really happy with our j2 item. (somemore even anan commented on fb that she was proud of us HAHA)
even though it wasnt of o crew, wrecking crew orchestra or any kpop group standards (some of them are really good actly),
when we were watching the video taken by xixian's mum for our j2 item during ptp, we were seriously stunned. it looked amazingly coordinated and really nice. it is at those moments when pride really swells in your heart for having put in so much effort in cleaning up, spending those lengthy and tedious hours practising everything, and producing a wonderful item that we were proud of.

in the end, it's really how much you want it, how much you choose to make dancenight worthwhile and enjoying these last experiences together.

hopefully we've impressed yall enough to inspire you guys to strive to dance well and live this passion for dance. and that we've been nice seniors that have helped to make your j1 dance experience a great one.

hello people (: long time no post.

anyway, this post is meant for the juniors. wanted to say you to you guys in person but i realised that i probably won't get to see all of you all in one place anytime soon due to suspension and stuff. plus i'll forget what i wanted to say. this kinda gives me time to think and type sense lol :D

so here goes.

i think quite a few of you are going through a difficult time now. results going down the drain. parents breathing down your necks. school admin and teachers just right behind them queueing up for their turn to breathe down you necks.

yeah i know how that feels. kinda experienced that last year. and actually still am. but i hope you guys won't lose your passion for dance just because of these difficulties. cos right now, when i go for pracs, i'm not feeling the enthusiasm you guys used to show anymore. it feels kinda empty, like you guys are just going for pracs because you have to. i'm not saying all of you are like this. but quite a few of you are.

just keep dancing, and soon you'll be over this phase.

but right now, i guess you guys really need to study. i didn't expect your results to turn out so bad. hope you guys will study hard from now, at least for the sake of MAD's reputation. without it, how would you all be able to fulfill your new exco's goals of bringing dance night out of school? how would you be able to improve your dance standards if you're banned from pracs? try to organise your time properly, and try to get a decent pass for promos. it may be difficult, but try your best yeah (:

ok so that's for studies. now for another issue.

i'm not sure if it's because of class, but a whole lot of you were late for anan's practice today. and not just this practice. past practices i've been to have also been like that. and i remember there was once when i had to go to class benches to hunt those of you late for prac down one by one to go for prac. i just want to point out that going to prac on time is not just because jingyao or congzhi tells you to do so, but it also is a sign of respect for anan, and to let prac start on time and not make people waste time calling you to tell you to come. this is the first time i'm actually seeing such things happening, and for my senior batch and my batch, we were seldom, if not never, late for anan's prac. in fact, we always reach at least 10 minutes earlier to change and maybe warm up a little. so i hope you guys will take punctuality seriously in the future yeah.

and lastly, something about your dances.

i'm glad that i'm seeing some of you improve pretty quickly. but some of you are still almost the same as when i saw you during auditions. i think you know who you are, so please practice hard cos i don't think you want to be left behind while your batch improves without you.

and for those people improving, you guys need to work on your basics more. don't try to skip steps and try advanced things when your basics such as down and up rythms are still in a mess. your form (meaning how nice you look when you dance) will suffer if you do that, and it'll be hard to change after a while. especially for the guys, who're trying out funk styles. practice your up rythms more, and take note of small details such as your arms, lines and so on. it's just like writing an essay. your techniques are essentially your vocabulary and grammar. how can you write anything without those? well i guess you can but it'll all be gibberish no one understands. same goes with dance. without proper technique, nobody would understand what you're doing while you're dancing, and probably won't find it appealing either.

and try to start with slower songs too while freestyling. focus on control and groove, as well as power, and try out techniques anan taught with variations and different transitions from one move to another. fast paced choreos and freestyles are visually appealing and all that, but once again, start from the basics.

hope you guys actually bothered to read all that. and managed to take in some of it.

Reminiscing

i thought i probably couldnt find another time to say this,
but after reminiscing with thew fishy daryll and weisheng and some of our juniors at kap today,
really got inspired to type something.

first off thanks juniors for the awesome jts :D it was awesome ttm (:

dance night is in 2 months time only! hope you guys have been practising hard! there's only about 10 plus practices for every item you have left, give or take. i hope yall take every practice seriously from now on yea. there's really not much time left.

please try to finish learning and master you choreographies by the end of this month, because that's only the easy part.

the more important part would be learning how to express the music through the dance. and that would take a lot more practising.

i'm sure a lot of you have noticed that zai dance crews look zai in their showcases not only because they are able to execute their moves well, but also to be themselves. for example, the performance by joyce and the boys at the international hip hop competition in USA last year. it was really a breathtaking performance, not only because of the moves, but also seeing the dancers execute the moves as if it were all part of themselves and they were enjoying themselves so much on stage. and our seniors, though their technical skill may be very good, they're really good at being themselves on stage, and i'm sure you agree with me their item last year was really memorable.

i think this is a level all of us have yet to reach. both the j2s and the j1s. for the j2s, from watching out past performances, i get the feeling that we're really boring dancers and we're trying really really hard to remember the moves on stage and it almost seems like we're counting the beats while we're dancing. for the j1s, i haven't seen yall perform yet so i hope yall are better, but do take note of the stuff below anyway.

when we perform, we shouldn't be just doing the routine. we should be dancing it. put your heart and soul into the dance, and don't think too much about trying to look good in front of the school, or what might happen if you screw up. cause that way, you're bound to look stupid. just listen to the music, and let your body move to the song that you've practised countless times to.

don't be too stiff on stage. relax and move the way the music is making you move, not everyone has to do the choreography exactly the same. we're not robots so don't worry too much.

and also remember to make your movements bigger than normal when you're practising choreography. your movements are gonna seem way smaller on stage. also don't give the "oh i'm not going full out now i'll go full out on stage". every time you practise, make sure you give it your all. it's just like preparing for exams. if you don't practise under exam conditions, how can you hope to score well? so i don't wanna see people slacking off during practices again k :D

oh but this does not mean you don't practise the technical parts of the choreography! these are important as well, as you are doing a performance after all, and you will probably look like some idiot if you end up doing a move completely different from the rest of the dancers on stage. so make sure you get your moves right, then move on to the next level.

Hey guys, it’s Jasmine and Ben aka pSyk again. This week, it’s about Style Talk.
Every dancer should know their history regardless of what style you are dancing to. Be it Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz, Breaking, Locking, Popping, Social Dancing, anything. We need to make the effort in reading up on our history, or by watching videos.

Today, we will be covering on the history of Hip Hop.

In the early aspects of the Bronx before and during the creation of Hip Hop (the late 60s and 70s), there was a drastic change going on in the streets of NYC. A gang is like family members, and by that, it means that your family is your complete neighbourhood.

In Hip Hop culture, there is always an association of gang influence. There were many instances where Hip Hop heads were gang members themselves. DJ Kool Herc earned his respect from gangs by giving shoutouts to them while spinning on the wheels of steel, and he kept peace in the jams.

From South Bronx, the biggest gang leader who changed his gang into the biggest Hip Hop motion in the streets of New York and ultimately, the world, is Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation.

The first forms of Hip Hop music was born in the African Americans New Yokers block parties in the Bronx during the 1970s. In the first Hip Hop hits, performers began rapping when the music (especially funk and soul music) played. They were originally called MCs.

In the early 1970s, breaking began as part of the block parties as b-boys, and b-girls had cyphers (jams) and they danced to the drumbeats with footwork, toprocks, freezes and powermoves.

Freestyle Hip Hop came around ’84 as the overexposure of Funk and Bboying reached it's peak, with the release of movies like “Breakin”, “Breakin2/Electric Boogaloo”, and “Beatstreet” as well as other various commercials and videos. In ’85, the dance forms died down and it stayed dead til about ’86.

A club called UNION Square, gave birth to was what is known today as Freestyle Hip Hop. Buddha Stretch’s friend, Tron, prepared a show together with some bboys and poppers, to perform one night. On the night of the performance, the dancers decided not to perform due to the rowdy crowds but instead, they jammed. It was after that night that the club wanted them to perform every week.

Buddha Stretch was the choreographer along with Michele Ann Travis’s help who did the promotion for the club. It was the beginning of Freestyle Hip Hop dance as he incorporated all the dances he knew or just learned into their routines. From there onwards, he went on to dance for the famous group WHODINI, in the summer of 87'.

MOPTOP was officially formed in formed in ’91 and Elite Force did not officially come together as a crew until ’93.

Hip Hop dance is basically, as Buddha Stretched said, an "Urban Social Organised Dance".

Why? Hip Hop dance was inspired by the music. The music gave birth to the movement. And each song gave birth to a certain move. Everyone knew the song, everyone knew the move and they would do it together. It didn't matter who you were or where you were from. It didn't matter what dance background you had, or even if you had any. You could have been a popper, a locker, a breaker. No one cared. Everyone just wanted to have fun. If you went to The Monastery in St. Louis, you would be doing the move named after the club. We use this move so often in our choreographies these days but I think, only 10% of those who know the move actually know the history behind it.

Why is knowing your history so important?

Easy: If you don't know where you came from, you won't be able to move forward. Know your foundations, and understand them. Knowing your history helps you understand the foundations even more. And only by truly understanding your foundations, are you able to create something brand new out of it.

What's rapping?
Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting (bars), or just rhyming) refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a strong rhythmic accompaniment (beats as we know it). Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music.

Flow and beats in rapping
'Flow' in rapping is defined as "the rhythms and rhymes" of a hip hop song's lyrics and how they interact. Staying on the beat is central to rap's flow.
MCs stay on-beat by stressing syllables in time to the four beats of the musical backdrop. (we dance in counts of 8 which is twice that of music but essentially the regular beats music and dance follow are the same)
Rap lyrics are made up of, “lines with four stressed beats, separated by other syllables that may vary in number and may include other stressed syllables. The strong beat of the accompaniment coincides with the stressed beats of the verse, and the rapper organizes the rhythms of the intervening syllables to provide variety and surprise.

History
The old use of the word 'rap' was to describe quick speech or repartee (conversation involving prompt and witty replies) long predates hiphop music.

The word had been used in British English since the 16th century, and specifically meaning "to say" since the 18th. It was part of the African American dialect of English in the 1960s meaning "to converse", and very soon after that in its present usage as a term denoting the style of hip hop music. Today, the terms "rap" and "rapping" are so closely associated with hip hop music that many use the terms interchangeably.

Rapping can be traced back to its African roots. Centuries before hip hop music existed, the griots (A storyteller in western Africa who perpetuates the oral tradition and history of a village or family) of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically, over drums and sparse instrumentation.

During the mid-20th century, the musical culture of the Caribbean was constantly influenced by the concurrent changes in American music. As early as 1956, deejays were toasting (an African tradition of "rapped out" tales of heroism) over dubbed Jamaican beats.

One of the first rappers in the beginning of the hip hop period, in the end of '70s, was also hip hop's first DJ, Kool Herc. Herc, a Jamaican immigrant, started delivering simple raps at his parties, inspired by the Jamaican tradition of toasting.

If you've been reading consciously, you'll realise that there's supposed to be a distinction b/w the deejay and DJ mentioned above. so read below:

Deejays and disc jockeys
A deejay (alternatively spelled DJ - which makes it difficult to distinguish between the 2) is a reggae or dancehall musician who sings and toasts to an instrumental riddim (rhythm).

Deejays are not to be confused with disc jockeys from other music genres like hip-hop, where they select and play music.

In other words, DJs in hip hop culture refer to disc jockeys, the masters of the turntables with the big discs often associated with parties and dance battles.

Subject matter
Rappers often make reference to a certain subject matter in their raps as well. Types of raps include party raps (the standard raps often associated with hip-hop), raps centred around themes such as love, crime, sociopolitical issues, street or gangster lifestyles and religion.

alright, first off, here's a video for you guys to watch.

you guys may have seen it before (hopefully .__.)

but anyway, IT'S FREAKING DOPE. goes to show that the singapore dance scene is really good. which make us guys kinda like. uhm, frogs in wells. yeah. but it's ok, we only just started for a year. just keep improving.

my favourite in the video is ryu :D just check out the way he moves his body to the music :D the way he uses his isolations and waves, it's like the music is controlling his movements.

most of us would be able to use these techniques too, but i think sometimes, we just don't know how to when the music plays, or just keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. not that it's wrong, but for different kinds of songs, you should be dancing differently. the dance is inspired by music after all.

sometimes we listen to the beats too hard. we keep looking out for special beats to hit, or the snares in the music to make a sharp movement with. but when doing that, we often forget to bring out the essence of the music. we forget to move to the music, to just dance and feel the emotions the music is creating, and to amplify them in your movements. so we end up spamming techniques instead of dancing.

some of us do have the feel, to some extent. but don't have the technique. that just makes yourself unable to bring out the song, and end up looking like we're doing aerobics. so yeah, don't neglect to work on your techniques and just freestyle all day. i'm guilty of that lol :/

oh well it's just some things i've observed when i see you guys freestyling. so find your own weaknesses and work on them yeah. otherwise you won't improve much.

lol and watching auditions over the past two days made me realise how much all of us improved haha :D we'll be having juniors soon! yay! must remember to work hard to improve yourself ah. if not how to teach juniors haha (:

anyway, this issue is just here to remind to you practice your choreo, be it in your mind or physically. remember the steps so that when you hear the music tomorrow and wednesday the steps just flow out naturally (:

and our audition's gonna be on 6th of february! please remember to keep that date free yeah.

i think some of us might think that 'oh i need to study i can't become as dope as those who can dance all day' or 'ohman look at that guy how the hell do i match up to him'.

if you think it's hard for you to become a good dancer, think about all those people out there who never had a studio, who never had an instructor, and had to learn all they had today on the streets, from friends or even strangers. the dope guy in the video probably had a hard time going through all that to reach that level.

compared to us. we've got anan. we've got such imba studios and facilities. i'm sure we can become as good as those people one day. just keep trying (:

alright so if you don't have short term memory lost, you will remember we did a short choreo as well as freestyled today.

the choreo quite hard la. go download the song and practise. it's called symphony by a lot of people according to jessica :D

anyway next up, more importantly is the freestyle session.

i thought today was pretty good. you guys all went up without hesitation to freestyle (: that's a great improvement from before, attitude wise. keep it up :D

but right now i'll talk about what freestyle really is, and how you guys can improve on it.

basically i'll just be summarising stuff i've read all over the net. you may have read it before but just read it again :D

freestyling is in short dancing to music impromptu. (duh)

so you might wonder, how the hell do i come up with something to throw out on the spot if i haven't heard the song before?

and then some of you would end up spamming downbeat and some move you may have pre-choreographed before.

like what anan said, freestyle isn't about just going up there and spamming all the moves and technical stuff you know.

it's about listening to the music, and getting the rhythm and the feel of the song.

it's comparable to writing a compo (:

so for writing a compo (your freestyle), you'd need proper grammar, a good vocabulary bank, punctuation, as well as good ideas (:

grammar in a compo would be like your flow while freestyling. just like grammar in a compo, flow would be essential to proper freestyling, otherwise people won't be able to understand what you're trying to do on the floor.

vocab would be like your moves. although freestyling isn't all about moves, it's obviously important to have come basics and techniques la duh.

next, very important. punctuation would be like your rhythm. remember to vary your rhythm. like instead of going "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and 8" and throughout the whole of your freestyle, try going "1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 and". something like that.
can you imagine a whole compo with abosolutely no punctuation at all and just a monotonous chunk of words? that would be what your freestyle would end up like without rhythm.

also, very importantly, is your ideas i.e. your content in your compo. this would be like the feel in your freestyle. listen to the music, decide on what you want to do, how you want your freestyle to be like, be it strong, smooth, funky, more upbeat or more downbeat. try to fit it more to the music.
the music would be like your compo question. if you don't answer the question your compo will end up weird. same thing goes for your freestyle (: like, if you see someone krumping to a song like mad by neyo what would you think? a bit exaggerated la, but you get the point. vary your freestyle according to different songs.

bascially this is all i can think of now for ways to improve your freestyle. try to read up more on your own. understand more about hip hop, more about dance. understand more about what you're doing for almost a year already :D

open class today not bad leh. didn't expect so many people to turn up.

and today was a back to basics lesson to us too. i think most of us realised today that our basics are not that strong yet. so remember to practise up and downbeat yeah. they're just as important as the techniques and choreos anan teach us. in fact more important.

oh and remember to practise with different tempos. try not to keep trying with slow songs yeah(:
